Martin Scott has insisted there is no need for any doom and gloom as he believes Hartlepool will be challenging the League One playoffs by the end of the season.

Scott has seen his team come within three points of the play off places this season but some home supporters are yet to be convinced, especially after the highs in recent years.

‘There has been a lot of negativity around the club this season for some reason, but my belief in the players has never changed. They have worked extremely hard to get us within touching distance of the play-off places and it is testament to their character.

‘We have had a lot of problems with injuries and suspensions, but they have kept at it and it says a lot about them. From the regulars, to the young players who have come in and the injured players coming back, they have all shown tremendous character and we are in a similar position to last year, so the negativity won’t affect me.

‘In the last two seasons Hartlepool United has massively over-achieved and both Neale Cooper and myself said exactly that at the time. I knew this job would be a massive challenge and it still will be. But my opinion, which has never wavered, is that we will make progress.

‘The main thing for this club is that we progress forward and that is what we are trying to do.’
