Hartlepool United defender Neil Austin has admitted that the home draw with Gillingham was two points lost.

Gillingham had only picked up only 2 points on the road all season but took the lead at Victoria Park before Austin’s leveller.

”Obviously it was important not to lose. But when you’re playing teams down there, especially at home, we needed three points.” he told the Mail.

”Everyone was a bit down in the dumps after the game. But the gaffer and Ritchie Humphreys came in and told us all to get our heads up and take the positives out of it.”

He went on to say that Pools now need to collect points in their upcoming fixtures ”Looking at our fixtures over the last four games and the four coming up, this was the one everyone expected three points from.

”It was important not to lose but I think it’s two points lost. They’re only three points behind us so we could have opened a little gap up because we’ve got tough games coming up.”

At least he is willing to admit that a failure was a failure – I respect him more for being down in the dumps than for taking the positives from it.
