Hartlepool United’s excellent run of form came to an end as league leaders Doncaster ran out comfortable winners against John Hughes’ men.

Pools made just one change to the team ahead of the game with Andy Monkhouse replacing the injured Simon Walton.

The visiting side started the game strongly but fell behind when striker fired home after 35 minutes.

That lead was extended early in the second half when ex-Hartlepool winger James Coppinger grabbed his first of the season.

Substitute Steve Howard spurned a golden chance to pull one back for Pools before Billy Paynter added a third for the leaders in the last 10 minutes.

Elsewhere, a win for Colchester means John Hughes’ men are now 8 points from safety in League One.
