Former Assistant Leaves Middlesbrough

Craig Hignett, in many people’s eyes, was a key component to the partnership with former Pools manager Coops and his departure coincided with a downward spiral that Coops couldn’t recover from.

Would Coops still be in charge now if Hignett hadn’t left to return to Middlesbrough?

It’s a difficult question to answer and probably not one that I can. It’s possible that both would have parted company when Coops did earlier in the season, then again perhaps they wouldn’t have, but what’s certain is that Coops was missing the guidance from his former assistant and wasn’t getting the same level of support from anyone else that stepped in a so called similar role.

Surprisingly, with Hignett thought to be a key component also to Middlesbrough’s improvement in the Championship this season, it was announced that he’s left his assistant head coach position after discussions with manager Aitor Karanka.

Whatever the future holds for Hignett, and I know it’s not really of concern to us, I’m sure it’ll prove to be successful with him soon back in work.
