Walton Holds His Hands Up

At times you’ve got to admit when you are in the wrong, or at fault, and Simon Walton has done that.

Hartlepool were on course for a win at Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday until they came back and ended up beating us 2-1 in the end with Walton admitting to sportmail that the winning goal was his fault.

There was some confusion between himself and Scott Flinders but as Matt McClure was Walton’s man and he let him get away ultimately he’s admitted it was his error and is willing to ‘hold his hands up’ to the costly error.

‘I hold my hands up. We will have an investigation but I think it was my man that scored from the corner.

‘There was a bit of confusion but it is a poor mistake.’

Coops has already bemoaned the defensive mistakes that cost us the goals, and the points, with the midfielder echoing these thoughts but he still feels that Flinders could have been fouled in the build up to the goal.

Whatever though he knows, which seems to be a reoccurring theme these mistakes need to be ‘eradicated’ for the season to end for us as the aims are.

‘It is two goals that we wouldn’t have conceded in recent games and it is disappointing.

‘Scotty shouted and looked like he was going to get it and then at the last minute he was either blocked or stopped.

‘It went so quick and the man ran off the back of me and headed it in.

‘It is a poor mistake, but it is something we need to eradicate and not allow many more if we are going to push on and get to where we are aiming for.’

You win as a team and lose as a team, perhaps sometimes individual errors can prove more costly but it’s a team game isn’t it.

Credit to Walton for admitting his faults but it can’t be undone, preventing future issues is all we can do now isn’t it.

This defeat should finally end the play off talk, which was unlikely anyway, and a midtable to top ten finish can be achieved as that would be very nice and more than welcome being more along the lines of what I’d hoped for from our first League 2 season of rebuilding and consolidation under Coops.
