When Grimsby visited Home Park to face Plymouth, despite the long unbeaten run the leaders had been on this was expected to be a tough match but the Mariners going away with a thee-nil win wouldn’t have been expected against Argyle! That win saw Grimsby into the top seven.

This also opened the door for those below Plymouth to close the gap. This is exactly what Carlisle did with a three-two win over Exeter keeping the Cumbrians in second and to within four-points of the leaders. The Grecians dropped to the bottom of the Football League.

Doncaster also closed the gap, the third placed side beating Hartlepool at the Keepmoat Stadium. Craig Hignett would have hoped that first win at home could be followed up but it wasn’t with a two-one defeat suffered with Luton also collected three-points with a two-nil win at Morecambe.

One who didn’t capitalise were Portsmouth, who had to be content with a point at Cheltenham. With Pompey a goal-down in the final 10-minutes a one-one draw at Whaddon Road probably wasn’t a bad result, which many might think it wasn’t anyway?

Another side who moved into the play-off places were Blackpool with the impressive run going on and a two-one win at Leyton Orient taking Pool up to seventh with another side on an impressive run since Graham Westley was appointed being Newport. The three-nil win at Notts County took them out of the bottom two.

Having been relegated last season Colchester’s struggles continue with the U’s now dropping into the bottom two in League 2 as well after a two-one defeat at Yeovil. That Huish Park defeat means just Exeter are below them.
