Former Premier League referee Jeff Winter is here every week on Vital Hartlepool and he’ll be giving his opinions on all things football each week.

You can email any questions to hartlepool@vitalfootball.co.uk or leave an article comment and the questions will be put to him in the next column.

Jeff, what did you think of the comedy of errors made by Mark Clattenburg in Saturdays derby?

How could he miss a certain foul on Joleon Lescott, only book Dirk Kuyt for a challenge that could have broken Neville’s leg and swap a yellow card for a red just because Stevie Gerrard told him to.
Dan

Mark Clattenburg Going to be difficult to change your mind Dan about Clatts. Yes it should have been a penalty, the Ref though as had happened earlier in the game must have thought that Lescott was backing in. He made a human error of judgement on that one in my opinion.

Kuyt did not actually make contact, so therefore I think the yellow card was correct. Regarding the Gerrard incident, everybody is incorrectly jumping to the conclusion that Gerrard made the Ref change his mind. What actually happened was the Ref pulled his book out and with it was the yellow card, he then correctly sent off Hibbert. He did not change his mind!!!

Who would you say is the best ref of all time? I trust you won’t say yourself Jeff!
Paul

George Courtenay was as a good a Ref as I have seen, obviously Collina was very good also and no I would not say myself.

If you want to ask Jeff Winter anything, refereeing related or not, you can email hartlepool@vitalfootball.co.uk with your question or leave an article comment and they’ll be put to him in the next column. They don`t necessarily need to be related to Hartlepool United either. Remember to visit Jeff’s official site over at www.jeffwinter.co.uk and to listen to him each Saturday on 96.6 TFM.
