Hartlepool United Chairman Ken Hodcroft has released a statement regarding the death of Pools youngster Michael Maidens.

Hodcroft is currently in the Middle East on business but made the following statement on hartlepoolunited.co.uk.

The sad news of Michael Maidens’ untimely death has come as a huge shock to everyone at Hartlepool United.

Michael was a genuinely lovely young gentleman who was a credit to his family and the football club.

A smile was never far from his face and the positive way he approached life was reflected on the football pitch where he always played with determination and a real sense of fun.

Of course, many will remember him most for his stunning goal against Huddersfield Town in March 2006 which was subsequently voted Goal of the Season.

That strike was typical of Michael. He had great skill and a real confidence in his own ability; indeed it was a joy to see him develop as a player and a person at Hartlepool United.

We will all miss Michael enormously and our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends at this extremely sad time.
