Hartlepool United ended their home campaign with a solid point against promotion chasing Brentford.

With Pools officially relegated in midweek, the Bees were favourites going into the fixture but were second best throughout the first half.

The home side made their possession count when a mistake in the Brentford midfield allowed Luke James to break down the left hand side.

He found Jack Baldwin making his way into the box. Although his effort was blocked on the line, the ball fell to James who threaded the ball through a number of defenders and into the back of the next.

Scott Flinders was in excellent form throughout the match and pulled off a great save to deny Jonathan Douglas. However, he was beaten moments later as Pools failed to clear their lines and Marcello Trotta was given enough space to fire past the keeper.

The second half was a much more tepid affair, Brentford took control of the fixture and Pools sat deeper and deeper.

Ritchie Humphreys struggled to hold his own in the middle while Simon Walton, who could have been sent of earlier in the game for a studs showing challenge, failed to make an impact.

Brentford spurned chances to grab a winning goal which would have sent them into the automatic promotion places ahead of the season’s final day and the points were fairly shared at the full time whistle.

FT: Hartlepool 1 Brentford 1
