Hartlepool United may have won performance of the First Round for our 3-1 win over Rotherham in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy a couple of week ago, but the Football Association have still fined us for fielding an ‘under strength’ side.

A statement on the Football League website read:

‘The Football League have fined Scunthorpe United and Hartlepool United for failing to comply with the rules of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy relating to clubs fielding full available strength teams in matches.

Scunthorpe United have been fined £4,500, of which £1,500 will be suspended for a year.

Hartlepool United have been fined £1,500, with the full amount being suspended for a year.

In the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy clubs are required to field at least six of the eleven first team players that have appeared in most matches this season, to date. Both clubs failed to comply with Hartlepool fielding just five players and Scunthorpe three.’

Does the five players we fielded include Ritchie Humphreys? Ritchie was recalled for the game after spending a month playing League One football for Port Vale.

Anyway, £1500 suspended, that’ll teach us!

This is a pointless competition . Attendances didnt rise. It should be abolished.

Pointless is a bit harsh, anybody that’s been to the final and won it would argue it is far from pointless.
