Hartlepool United’s caretaker manager Mick Wadsworth has praised midfielder Paul Murray for his start to the season.

A few eyebrows were raised when the veteran midfielder joined the club from Shrewsbury in the summer but his impressive performances on the pitch have made a big impact to the team.

”People say Paul is my talisman and I’m just lucky he has been available when I’ve taken jobs.” Mick Wadsworth told the Echo. ”I think he has been a bit unlucky in his career, because the signs were he was going to be a big, big player.

”He played for England Under-19s and Under-21s and had some bad injuries which really stuttered and slowed down his career. It was a shame as he could have played for England, he did at other levels, but not the full team.”

Wadsworth said that Murray’s experience has had a positive impact on the entire squad ”He has been a big hit with the players here as they can see what he can do.

I think the fans appreciate him, there’s not too many players running around tackling players now, he likes it and it’s a lovely thing to see.

”Hopefully it’s not lost from the game when Paul is around. He’s got a lot of continuity in him and sad thing, that we haven’t seen yet, is that he has a goal in him.”
