Hartlepool United have announced the appointment of John Hughes as first team coach at the club.
Hughes leaves Scottish First Division side Livingston FC to take the reins at Victoria Park after discussions between the two parties reached a successful conclusion today.
The former Hibernian and Falkirk manager will work alongside reserve team coach Micky Barron in the new set-up at the club. Hughes will start life in English football with a home game against Coventry City this weekend.
Chief executive Russ Green told the official website that he was ‘delighted’ with the appointment of Hughes: ”We’re convinced we’ve got the right man in place to take the club forward.
”Everybody knows that this appointment was a crucial one for the club so we have taken our time, assessed our options and John is the choice we are all extremely happy with.
”He has a vision for the football club, he has a passion and a drive to succeed and we hope that the fans will be as excited as we have to have him in place.”
It had previously been thought that former Hull boss Phil Brown was set to take charge at Pools, but talks between Brown and HUFC collapsed earlier today.

Well looks like the board havedone it again, another never heard of manager taking on our club having no experiance of English football, we have become the same as the old England teamwith the same old faces in the background…. who ever told MickyBarron he was a manager, great player, great captain… but he cant manage, and now we hear he is to be involved with this new guy.
The only problem with this board is they wont take risks, we had the perfect man lined up and again they blow it……………

agree sallyjord, we have become a joke club, they took time to get the right man, we all know that is utter crap. they took him on because brown said no to barron as number 2.
the club had a chance to show fans, they mean business and take the club to the next level, instead we end up with nothing changes and barron still at the club with humps as coach as well…were a joke, oh and Russ were not excited
What a bloody joke. We had the perfect chance to go the “new broom sweep clean” option and totally revamped the coaching staff but no, we’ve got the same monkeys with a different organ-grinder and one with no experience of English football at that. Absolutely disgusted. Will be staying away for the foreseeable future until IOR start to show some sort of ambition for this club. Today was the day we effectively shrugged our shoulders and resigned ourselves to Division 4 football this season. And I tell you this – we won’t be making an instant return this time around.
The irresponsible decisions that Ken Hodcroft has taken today could well signal the death knell for OUR club as we know it. Its no skin off his nose of course, he can simply walk away and revert to jumping back onto the sickening barcodes bandwagon when things finally go t*its up at Pools. In point of fact, surely there is something at the very least immoral about being in control of one professional football club whilst unashamedly and publicly following another?
A disaster for all the fans the club had a chance to move away from the old boys club just looking at past results when managers have left shows barron to be inept but the club have decided to go down the same route as always I have to say Hughes has a reputation for hard man management but so did cooper I’d like to give him a chance but I fear the seasons a write off and have to agree that the club has alot to learn and a longway back

Agree nothing we can do now, got to get on with it, but ill put a bet now that we are going down the same road this time next season…nothing has changed, and were going down the same road…I hear fans saying he’s a hard man etc, but cooper kicked more arse then any one and it still didnt work..oh have a look on Livingston, there sad to see him go, and say his style is lump it, get on well with Barron then, lol…well we just after see what happens, but of we lose Saturday at least Hughes has plenty time to palm for next season

Agree, we can’t change what’s done and I seriously hope Hughes proves me wrong. I’m sure he’s not a bad manager but you could put Mourinho into the current situation – clueless backroom team that’s not of his choosing, demotivated squad that already seems resigned to being back in the basement division and a chairman who seems totally oblivious to the fact that his “mind the pennies” method of running the club, while it’s served us well in the past, is now doing the club far more harm than good – and he’d struggle to keep us in this division. That’s what I’m so angry about – if Ken had just agreed to let Brown bring in his own coaching team then we could’ve at least had a clean break from the past. It might’ve worked or it might not but surely if things aren’t working then you change them, not just put one new bloke in at the top and hope for the best while keeping the same bunch of muppets in the background who the players wanted to play so much for that they shipped six goals against a mid-table division 4 side. Like I say, I wish Hughes all the best but I think we’ve passed up on the opportunity to make the changes that would’ve given us a fighting chance of staying up – it feels like everyone at the club has resigned themselves to relegation already and it’s bloody depressing frankly.
