Friday night was either ‘miserable’ or ‘memorable’ depending on what side of the Hartlepool v Blyth Spartans fence you were sitting on. Miserable from ours as a last minute goals saw us crash out of the FA Cup.

Hartlepool, for a second successive game, allowed a lead to slip as non-league Blyth came back to book a dramatic last minute place in the FA Cup third round after a 2-1 win at Victoria Park on Friday night.

This was a game that the TV cameras wanted an upset from, why else would they have turned up at Victoria Park on a Friday night! Having started well Jonathan Franks (31) eventually gave us the lead we deserved just past the half hour mark finishing at the far post.

Further goals could have come before the break but one-nil is all it was at half time.

Hartlepool’s inability to add that second, and make dominance pay, came back to cost us early in the second half when former Hartlepool man Stephen Turnbull (56) curled home a wonderful freekick to level it up.

A lead was restored, or so it was thought, when Marlon Harewood bundled the ball over the line but with it such a close call and without TV replays in the FA Cup this wasn’t given.

Blyth took the lead in the last minute when Jarrett Rivers (90) went past Dan Jones to fire past ‘keeper Scott Flinders with the board then going up for six-minutes of added time. Matthew Bates went up front for the closing minutes and he almost forced an equaliser but his effort was deflected onto the bar and over as we crashed out.
