The release of Ben Clark not only brought an end to a six year stay at the Vic, but it also upset close friend Neil Austin.

The 2006/07 promotion winner was one of seven who was included in the retained list last week, and the defender’s expiration of his contract has left a sour taste in the dressing room.

”Ben’s a big character in the dressing room and one of my personal friends because I’ve known him 15 years. I played for England with him for five years in the youths so I’m a bit gutted for him. I spoke to him before I signed and he sold the club to me.”

The release was made certain as Gary Liddle and Sam Collins kept him out the side for much of the campaign ”He said there was a good set-up and it was a good club to play for which helped my decision. But he’s not played much. The form of Gary Liddle going back to centre-half has been excellent.” Austin added.

”Ben’s been unfortunate after getting injured at the start of the season. When the other two are playing that well, he’s found it difficult to get in.”

So, Austin gets his awards and all he talks about is his ambitions for the championship.
Now he’s moaning about Clark going.
A summer sale I think when his agent gets the offers sorted!
