Weekend Overview

Leeds saw their lead at the top of the table cut to two points after they were held to a goalless draw at Brentford. Charlton took full advantage to close the gap on Leeds and piled the misery on Stockport with a 2-1 victory at Edgeley Park. Carl Baker was sent off for Stockport before Rob Elliot put through his own net in the closing seconds to give the home side hope, but Charlton held on for the points.

Darel Russell’s last-gasp goal earned Norwich a 3-3 draw with Yeovil after a topsy turvy game at Huish Park. Jonathan Obika looked to have grabbed the winner for Yeovil with a third goal in the final minute, but there was still time for Russell to net an equaliser.

Bristol Rovers moved into the play-off places with a 3-0 victory over fellow promotion hopefuls Swindon thanks to first-half goals from Andrew Williams, Jeff Hughes and Jo Kuffour. Southampton remain upwardly mobile after a 3-0 win over struggling Tranmere at St Mary’s Top scorer Rickie Lambert helped himself to two goals – one from the penalty spot – and Dan Harding’s opener gave Saints the three points.

Oldham picked up a much-needed win with a 2-0 success over fellow strugglers Exeter at Boundary Park. Deane Smalley broke the deadlock and loan signing Paul Heffernan added a second to ease the pressure on Dave Penney. Millwall came from behind to overcome Walsall at The Den with Steve Morrison’s brace cancelling out Emmanuele Smith’s early opener. Two quick-fire goals from Lee Novak and Jordan Rhodes helped Huddersfield beat Gillingham, who went in front courtesy of Simeon Jackson’s early strike.

Nigel Quashie’s dramatic late goal earned MK Dons a 2-1 win over Leyton Orient after Dean Morgan cancelled out Scott McGleish’s 17th minute opener. Vincent Pericard’s goal on the stroke of half-time earned Carlisle a 1-0 win over Wycombe at Brunton Park. Southend came from two goals down to beat Hartlepool 3-2 at Roots Hall with goals from Lee Barnard (2) and Francis Laurent’s strike cancelling out Adam Boyd’s opener and Anthony Grant’s unfortunate own goal.

Star Man

Steve Morison is grabbing his second chance of a football career with both hands. Before this season he had only managed 7 Football league starts, spanning 4 seasons with former club Northampton Town. After 3 very successful seasons with Stevenage (Scoring 70 goals in 127 Games) he caught the attention of Kenny Jackett who signed him for Millwall this summer.

Millwall are suffering heavily with injuries at the minute, especially upfront with Neil Harris and Gary Alexander both out. However this week Morison grabbed the headlines and the goals with an impressive display that earned him two goals.
