A late header by Rob Jones meant Hartlepool United let three valuable points slip through their fingers.

Steve Howard, Paul Murray and Antony Sweeney all returned to the first team line-up as Hartlepool welcomed Doncaster to Victoria Park.

A flat first half saw few chances, the best of which came through James Poole. On as a substitute for Evan Horwood, the former Manchester City man immediately fired an effort which smashed off the post.

Pools were given a perfect chance to score midway through the second period when Steve Howard was fouled in the area. Despite a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy defeat on spot kicks during the week, Neil Austin converted to give Pools the lead.

The home side look liked holding on for what would be only their second win of the season, but a late header by Rob Jones broke Hartlepool hearts. The ninth time Pools have conceded a goal in the last ten minutes this season.

The draw leaves Pools still in the relegation places, with four points separating Neale Cooper’s side and safety.
