Coops will be less than impressed, or at least should be, after another Hartlepool defeat in pre season, this time at Whitby Town on Saturday.

Defeat to Sunderland wasn’t too much of a surprise really, even though it was the U21 players that came on for the final 30 minutes that basically inflicted this, but a 2-1 defeat at the Turnbull Ground today was.

It was decided that changes would be made and Coops made nine in total to the side that started against Sunderland, only trialist Tommy Miller and Luke James keeping their places in the starting line up, Miller being replaced at half time.

Pools took a while to make the breakthrough, which had been threatened, with Connor Smith finishing into the corner after being set up by Lewis Hawkins. A lead couldn’t be taken into the half time break though with Chris Lynch given too much time and he levelled for Whitby almost instantly.

Lynch was given too much time again in the second half, we failed to clear a freekick and he scored again early in the second half with the goal that proved to be the winner condemning us to an embarrassing pre season defeat.

It’s only pre season but such a loss is still embarrassing and Coops, even though it’s about building up fitness, should be disappointed and have a few things that he should be pondering with the League 2 season just two weeks away now.

Pools: Rafferty (Flinders 46), Richards, Jones, Rowbotham, Collins, Nearney, Hawkins, Miller (Green 46), James (Harewood 79), Franks (Compton 79), Smith.
Subs not used: Bates, Austin, Duckworth, Parnaby, Holden, Walker.
