Hartlepool United midfielder Gavin Strachan may have scored Pools opening goal at Victoria Park on Bank Holiday Monday on his return to first team action, but he admitted after the match that Pools just got a bit edgy towards the end of the game and we need to start killing teams off.

Strachan told the Hartlepool Mail:-

‘The free kick was a tricky distance, in between a cross and a shot and Micky (Barron) said just to have a hit and see what happens. Fortunately it went in after a couple of bounces.

I am delighted to be back in the side, I have spent the last few weeks up in the stand eating biscuits! It was a bit weird when you have been playing reserve team football for a while and the first team is where I want to be, you enjoy it a lot more.’

Despite some criticism of Martin Scott’s decision to bring Strachan off in the 79th minute, Strachan put the record straight explaining that tiredness was the reason for his withdrawal.

‘It caught up with me in the end and I got cramp, every muscle in my body seemed to be aching. It was just a shame we couldn’t hold on and get all the three points. We got nervous and a bit edgy, we need to start killing off teams and we needed that second goal.’
