Hartlepool were beaten 1-0 by Blackpool in League 2 on Boxing Day.

The post and a missed penalty meant Hartlepool slipped to another defeat as play-off chasing Blackpool became the latest side to go away from Victoria Park with the points.

After a first half where Hartlepool couldn’t turn possession into chances Rhys Oates’ cross for Lewis Alessandra saw the striker denied by the post just past the hour mark as Pools threatened.

Blackpool then went ahead a few minutes later as Mark Cullen finished past Trevor Carson.

Hartlepool had the chance to claim a point in the final minutes following a handball from visiting defender Tom Aldred. However, Alessandra blazed his spot kick over Blackpool keeper Sam Slocombe’s crossbar.
