Vital Hartlepool takes another delve into the archives as we look at the events that unfolded this week in years gone by.

Lincoln City 3-1 Hartlepool United

Division Four: Saturday, 9th March 1991

Hartlepool’s late promotion push stuttered 20 years ago this week as Cyril Knowles’ Pools made it five games without a win. After the 3-1 defeat at Sincil Park Pools were in 11th position, but only 5 points off from the promotion places.

It was the eight time Pools had failed to win on Humberside in their last ten attempts as goals from David Puttnam and a brace from later-to-be Poolie Tony Lormer earned Lincoln the three points. It was Lormer’s third and fourth goals against Pools, and he would score 10 in just 6 games before joining Hartlepool around the 2000 era.

Poolyal Looks Back

I recall the 3-1 defeat at Lincoln and if I’ right it was in our ’91 promotion season. I managed to miss only 2 or 3 matches that season and that game turned out to be another one of our alcohol fuelled away days. There was a mini bus of us who went to Sincil Bank at the time, and the away end was open terrace which went down the side of the pitch and most of us found a small fence not far from the turnstiles which we were able to climb over and save some of our pennies! One person unable to climb over was my cousin who contrived to get himself arrested. He found it highly amusing though that the arresting copper was a female copper with the same surname as him!

He was locked in a police van and released without charge straight after the match. However missing the match in hindsight wasn’t a bad thing as we were soundly beaten with the help of 2 goals from a certain Anth Lormor! On the good side though it wasn’t too much later we embarked on a superb run of form that was to eventually have us promoted!

Hartlepool United 3-1 Huddersfield Town

League One: Friday, 10th March 2006

It’s a game that will never be forgotten for various reasons, but it included a moment of class, accuracy, power, swing, a goal of unmeasurable beauty. It’s highly recognised as part of Pools’ late surge towards League One survival, but it is best remembered for the goal scored by the late Michael Maidens – a goal which later won him the Goal of the Seaon, and the award has since been named in his memory.

Under Paul Stephenson it was the fifth game Pools hadn’t lost, and moved them up to 17th. Pools took the lead through Adam Boyd who converted after a pass from the left before Maidens sent the 4500 Poolies bizarre with his stunning strike. David Graham scored either side of those strikes, but Joel Porter wrapped up a memorable night at Victoria Park from 15 yards before he was hoisted aloft by his team-mates.

Birthdays

Evan Horwood is 25 this week and the current left back has already shown strong signs that he is here for the future with his home town club. A Sheffield United youth product, Horwood found chances limited at Brammall Lane and moved around on loan including Gretna and Darlington.

He made his first big step in 2008 where he moved to Carlisle and played on a regular basis for tonight’s opponents. But in the summer he was released and after a successful trial he joined Pools under Mick Wadsworth’s plea and he has been an ever-present figure since.

His left boot causes all sorts or problems for defenders and it a team where goals are hard to come by he has assisted most of them. His corners, free kicks are exemplary, and he can also strike a ball. He provides a strong attacking threat and nullifies the wingers – most notably Alex Chamberlain in recent weeks.
