It’s not always plain sailing is it, well it’s not often plain sailing in fact as there aren’t many (if any) gimmie’s in the game anymore.

Having won three successive away games Hartlepool were looking to do what Colin Cooper had asked of them and beat Plymouth at Victoria Park on Saturday.

James’ effort, in a game that we played well over an hour in with only ten-men when Compton saw red, was enough to secure us a 1-0 win.

Sometimes you just have to grind out, and put in the hard graft, to get a win and we did just that much to Cooper’s delight.

He said: ‘I have to say it’s the most satisfying win. You go away from home, look solid and express yourselves and win well. We have created chances and scored goals in those games.

‘I wasn’t happy with how we started, then we had a man sent off, but we became a team. That’s how we had to get a result.

‘Every player has given his heart and soul to Hartlepool United to make us win this game.’

This win, only our second at home this season, is something that the boss wants us to build on and not just go to waste.

As a former defender he took greater pride in the fact we secured “a grinder” with our backs to the wall and standing up to the Plymouth assault, adding: ”I was proud, my emotions took over. The crowd got behind the lads to help them across the line.

‘When they have come off the pitch I can still hear outside – I told them the crowd was right with them and fully behind them. Now they have to take it, don’t get this support and then all flat.

‘There’s been a shift. We had a productive week, this was a grinder. As a former defender to see my team grind it out makes me very proud.’

Can we make it five on the spin?

It’s certainly something that we’ll be looking to do when we return to action pretty quickly!
