Hartlepool United boss Danny Wilson was not too down after last nights 2-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.

The former Owl told Pools World that he was proud of his team ‘To go so close in extra time is a bit of a sickener but the lads should be proud as they put a real battling performance in.’

He admitted that his team were on the back foot for parts of the game ‘We had to do some defending at times and Jan made some good saves but that’s what Cup football is all about.

‘They pegged us back in the first half and they got in down the sides a few times but we held them out and when we went ahead I thought that would have been enough given the way things had gone.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Brian Laws was pleased his side overcame a tricky tie. The under pressure boss said ‘I am delighted with the response that I have had from the players.’

Laws continued to tell swfc.co.uk that Pools posed a big threat to his side ‘This was a big test for us yet the win was thoroughly deserved.

He singled out Pools keeper Jan Budtz for special praise ‘A lot of it was down to their goalkeeper, who made some magnificent saves. The score line could have been anything but the response was excellent.’
