Hartlepool have confirmed Billy Paynter isn’t going to play again this season due to his Achilles injury but he should be fit for the start of the 2017-18 season.

Paynter’s been sidelined since January due to the injury with a series of injections used in the hope of clearing up the problem. However, that didn’t work with the striker undergoing surgery on Wednesday.

Explaining the situation head Physio Ian Gallagher told the Official Site.

‘We wanted to give Billy the best chance of getting back this season which is why we went down the route of injections. Billy wanted to do everything to get back but it`s now got to the stage where the right thing to do is have the operation and make sure he`s fit and ready for go for the start of pre-season.’

The Hartlepool captain had scored 15 goals last season to finish as top goalscorer but hadn’t found the going easy this term as 32 year old Paynter has scored just four goals this term.
