Hartlepool United star Joel Porter has talked about his reasons for leaving Pools to return to Australia.

Porter will join Aussie A-League side Gold Coast United in the summer after five and a half years at Victoria Park.

He revealed that once the offer came in, he couldn’t refuse ”I was pretty ecstatic when I got news that an Australian side was looking to get me back home.

”Once I got that in my mind, there was pretty much only one thing I was going to do. Gold Coast are a new team who only started up this year and they have got some fantastic players.”

He said to the Mail that he hopes his new squad will challenge for the title next season ”They are looking to win things and play in the Asian Champions League which is something that the top two clubs go into the following year.

”Jason Culina is going back there from PSV and other good players who have made names within the Australian League.

”It’s a great area to live and it will be good not just for me, but for my family. It makes it easier for the grandparents to see grandkids and so forth.”

He quashed any rumours linking him with other English sides, insisting no offers had been received ”There was a few whispers that a few Championship sides were coming to watch.

”But I haven’t heard anything. I don’t have an agent or anything like that who can keep in touch with those sort of things.”
