Jeff is back for the new year and talks about respecting referees, Alex Ferguson and defends striker Kevin Kyle.
Jeff Winter
If you’re unfamiliar with the column then here’s how it works; each Thursday Jeff will voice his opinion on the week’s big talking points but you’re the one who sets the agenda. Whether you want to ask him about a dodgy refereeing decision, a question about Hartlepool United or football in general, you can!

If you want to ask Jeff Winter anything, refereeing related or not, you can email vital.hartlepool@hotmail.co.uk with your question or leave an article comment and they’ll be put to him in the next column.

Ask the Ref

Jeff, do you agree with Rafa Benitez’s assesment that Alex Ferguson gets special treatment from both referees and the governing bodies?
MikeRed

I have written articles on this subject, which appear on my website www.jeffwinter.co.uk, but in a few words, I do believe that the big clubs are treat differently to others and Refs are not supported when they take action against them.

Jeff, how can you possibly think that Kevin Kyle would be a good addition to the Pools squad. The guy was dreadful, no skill and the heart of a pea. You must be deluded.
Anonymous.

Why do you have to remain anonymous when you want to make such a ridiculous sweeping statement as that? The player possesses ability and wanted to be at the club, some of his performances may not have been up to scratch, but by the same token others were superb.

Unfortunately it is supporters like you, that make comments like that, that actually deter other better quality players joining the club.

If Pools are going to progress they need better players like Kyle. I am not deluded, I am afraid your ignorance of the game is the problem. You may not like a player, that’s your prerogative, but to castigate a professional footballer as having no skill is ridiculous.

Do you think that it’s fair that Manchester United chief David Gill sits on the FA board. Surely that is a massive conflict of interests?
Adam.

This sort of thing has always happened, the FA boards are made up in the main of people that come from clubs.

There is no reason to doubt their integrity but at time surely there must be a conflict of interests. I don’t know how you get totally independent people though, football people are involved with the game I some way or another and they are the people who sit on boards and committees.
