Four players have come to Hartlepool this summer with Craig Hignett more than happy with each and every one of them.

Lewis Alessandra, Padraig Amond, Aristote Nsiala and Nicky Deverdics have arrived at Victoria Park with Hignett talking to a lot of players but he insisted these were all first choice picks.

He told the BBC.

‘They were all our first choices. We went and spoke to a lot of people – myself and Curtis (Fleming) travelled up and down the country and I’m delighted they’ve all decided to join us. I think they’ll benefit us massively, the four we’ve got in are all top players.’

Alessandra, following his release from Rochdale, became the latest of these arrivals with him the latest of the ‘ambitious’ and ‘hungry’ players that ‘want to do well,’ adding.

‘Lewis has played at a real good level. He’s a clever footballer, fit and exactly what we need with our style of play and our philosophy. He feels like he’s got a point to prove and they’re the type of people I’ve tried to bring in – ambitious, hungry and want to do well.’

Hignett came in last season to see us secure our Football League status finishing in 16th.

What worked well last season he’s aiming to retain, adding a little something to it bringing in players that can do that and help us towards a possible promotion push finishing by saying.

‘I’ve got options with the lads I’ve brought in, I can play different ways if I want to but the basic way I play is the way played last year. That’s how I like to play, that’s how I think the lads suit it. The players I’ve brought in are ambitious and that matches my ambition as well. I don’t want people coming here who are coming for a payday or they’re coming to just end their career, I want people who are going to push on and want to play higher and want to do well for themselves.’

The pre-season plans has seen us add a match against Spennymoor Town to the schedule that will take place at Billingham Town on Friday 22nd July with a 7:30pm kick-off. Spennymoor will be our sixth pre-season friendly with match against Billingham Town, Sunderland, Livingston, Salford City and Scunthorpe too.

When League 2 gets underway it’ll take place with another change confirmed.

The visit of Morecambe to Victoria Park at the end of the year has been brought forward from New Years Eve to Friday 30th December, having a 7:45pm kick-off with this change made after both clubs agreed to the change.
