Hartlepool began their pre-season with a defeat against FC Volendam as the Dutch side ran out as 3-2 winners in Holland.
Pools got off to a sluggish start and winger Thijs Sluiter had broken the deadlock within 10 minutes after breaking through Pools defence. It was 2-0 soon after when striker Michiel Kramer headed home and Pools struggled to find a way into the match.
The game looked out of Pools reach when Sluiter made it 3 shortly after the interval but following a sending off for the home side Antony Sweeney pulled one back with a long range effort.
Michael Mackay made it 3-2 later in the second half but Pools couldn’t pull the scores level as an entertaining game in Heiloo ended in defeat.
