Hartlepool United’s second string fell to a 2-0 defeat in this afternoon’s Cup fixture with Gateshead.

Pools were on the back foot early on as goalkeeper Liam Mooney gave away an early penalty but Heed striker Jon Shaw missed the spot kick, his effort hitting the post.

In goal for Gateshead was former Pools keeper Mark Cook who was forced into making saves against Billy Blackford and Colin Larkin.

The visitors took the lead midway through the half through Brian Wake, a throw in found Wake at the back post and he slotted home.

After the break the Conference side doubled their lead as Wake grabbed his second of the match, a neat finish giving Mooney no chance. Pools will return to Totesport League East action next week as they welcome Scunthorpe United to Bedford Terrace.
