Hartlepool United recorded an unlikely win at League One play-off chasing Tranmere.

A makeshift Hartlepool United side recorded an impressive win on the road at play-off contenders Tranmere this afternoon.

Hartlepool were given the ideal chance to open the scoring after 10 minutes when Ben Gibson fouled in the area. Simon Walton’s weak spot kick was saved by Owain Fon-Williams, but Neil Austin reacted quickest to nudge the ball into the net from the rebound.

Pools had not kept a clean sheet away from home all season and that unwanted record looked likely to continue as Tranmere were awarded a second half penalty.

Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro went down after a challenge from Peter Hartley and the referee pointed to the spot.

However, a stunning save by Scott Flinders denied Andy Robinson from the penalty spot to keep Pools, a lead they kept in place until the final whistle.

FT: Tranmere 0 Hartlepool 1
