Craig Hignett couldn’t have wished for a better start as Hartlepool took victory over Yeovil Town at the weekend.

Hosting Yeovil at Victoria Park for Hignett’s first game in charge having come in as Ronnie Moore’s replacement, Billy Paynter and Adam Jackson gave us the two nil lead before the visitors hit back in stoppage time with a consolation of their own, and the gaffer was rightly pleased with a number of aspects to our play given the short period of time he’d been with the group.

Speaking to the Official Site in his post game press interviews – the first as manager in his own right – Hignett explained that he was pleased with the opening efforts of the lads but he knew there was a lot more to come as he gets longer to work with them and get his message over.

‘It`s a good start but that`s all it`s been – there`s still work to be done. The game was won at 2-0 and once they have a man sent-off they shouldn`t really get a sniff; that`s the professionalism I want from them, I want them to go and kill the game and finish teams off. In the first half we were a little isolated and we got a bit deep but it`s a new system for the players; they`ll get used to it and once they do you will see a more attacking side. Hopefully that win today will stand us in good stead but we know there is plenty still to do.’

Skipper Paynter obviously came in for praise from Hignett with him getting his ninth goal of the season on the day.

‘Billy is a leader and if you want someone to take a penalty in a pressure situation like that then he`s your man – I never had any doubt he`d score. He was terrific today but then everyone was – I think everyone really applied themselves.’

Notts County tomorrow evening and hopefully back to back victories would put a nicely different perspective on things especially with those remaining games in hand.
