Not everyone is able to make the breakthrough into the first team instantly.

Sometimes you have to take a step down before you can move forward and this is what Ben Gibson did when leaving Arsenal (where he’d been since an academy player) to join Middlesbrough a year ago…

That move alone wasn’t enough to get him first team football with the championship side, which again doesn’t mean it won’t happen as when you are young you also need to sometimes take in a bit of first team football elsewhere with another club to help your development that can come in the shape of a loan move.

Gibson has been doing this with Hartlepool this season.

He was snapped up by a man who knows plenty about Middlesbrough when Colin Cooper brought him in for a loan spell earlier this season, with him due to stay with us until December.

Cooper is keen to extend Gibson’s loan spell with us following the success of it, however it’s being reported that Boro have been keeping a close eye on the defender and following the tremendous form that he’s shown for Pools Tony Mowbray is contemplating bringing him into the first team picture at the Riverside and therefore won’t extend his loan?

Hopefully Gibson won’t be quite ready for the Boro first team when his loan ends and Cooper can sweet talk his former club into letting us keep the 21-year old a little longer though!
