Don’t Panic, Mr Mainwaring

As the old phrase from Dad’s Army would go ‘don’t panic, Mr Mainwaring’ and panicking is something that Coops is refusing to do and I’d back this way of thinking.

I’m a self-confessed fan of Coops, I know I don’t get to see the games but I tend to believe that he’s been doing a good job since he came to the Vic last summer and in another 6-12-months will be exactly where he wants to be in terms of players he has at the club, minus some of our younger ones that will be prised away by higher league clubs.

Results aren’t going well but overall Coops is doing well this season. The thing is though, as has been pointed out in the forum we live in a results based business in football and Coops needs to start getting these again as the thoughts of a promotion push when the year began are quickly disappearing with us quickly dragged back into the relegation battle in League 2 if we’re not careful.

He’s not being negative though and he’s told SportMail that he’s staying upbeat as he doesn’t think that performances are too far away from bringing the results that we need and isn’t ready to panic after what he called a horrible start to 2014.

‘It’s easy to be negative but we are not a million miles away from where we need to be.

‘We need to get our noses in front in a game and we need to get 2014 up and running.

‘It’s been a horrible start, three defeats, two at home, and a sending off but there is no point feeling sorry for ourselves.

‘We’ll crack on and look forward to playing York at home.

‘Saturday has gone, we have to put Fleetwood behind us by getting a result at the Vic.’

It’s easy to forget that we left 2013 just half a dozen points off the play-offs, at the moment I’m still looking up and not down but we’ve dropped 11 points off this now and if you are too look down you’ll see that we’re now only five points ahead of the relegation zone.

That’s far too close for comfort.

Playing with 10-men against Fleetwood was always going to make it tougher, but in the Rochdale game but for a bit of luck, and had we not made some poor defensive mistakes, we would’ve got more with the scoreline harsh but once again you have to stress the point that football is about results.

York represents a chance for us to stop the rot, I’d still not quite panic if we didn’t but a draw against the League 2 draw specialist should be the least we’re looking for at the Vic this weekend.
