Manager Colin Cooper has said that talks are ongoing with a number of potential targets he has this summer, and he’s paid tribute to Antony Sweeney for all his efforts at the club following news of his departure to Carlisle.

Speaking to the Official Site Cooper said that everybody was working hard behind the scenes to freshen up the squad and bring in more quality, and he was hopeful that things would progress to the point where the club could start making some announcements in the next fortnight or so.

‘I made Sweens an offer and gave him the opportunity to have a Testimonial year with the club. He was unsure what he wanted to do but he’s now chosen to leave and of course we wish him well for the future and thank him for his service to the club over the years. I think he’s a great lad with an excellent attitude which is why I made him Captain at the start of last season. Unfortunately for him he had a couple of injuries and didn’t play as many games as he would’ve liked to last year and now he’s gone for a fresh challenge.’

Cooper goes on to say that he feels everybody agrees that there does need to be some changes at the club now, so ultimately his task this summer is to make sure he brings in better players than the ones who have left us, but he’s quick to say he means no disrespect to the service given by those players, it is simply just a fact of football – you always try to replace with better.

‘The positive side is that I’m in negotiations with several players who I believe will improve the squad and they’re fresh faces who I hope the fans will enjoy watching next season.’
