Coincidence Or Collins Impact?

Sam Collins has come back into the Hartlepool defence and this has seen us record successive cleansheets in that time period, the latest being our win at Dagenham on Saturday.

Collins would only offer us ‘no comment’ in answer to the sportmail asking if it was merely coincidence that this has happened since his return. It was all said in jest I’m sure but, even if I’ve said that I’d be happier if Coops looked to bring in another defender as cover, we can’t underestimate the impact that Collins has had since coming back into the team.

He’s happy that he has since Jack Baldwin was sold to Peterborough but now that he’s back in the side he wants it to stay that way.

‘It is just good to be back playing.

‘Jack did well for us and I’m sure he will go on to bigger and better things.

‘The gaffer has asked me to play and the longer that goes on the better, because I just love playing.’

I wasn’t at the game but Collins, who captained us, is said to have had a very good game with his commanding of the defence highlighted. I wouldn’t expect anything else from the 36-year-old though.

Collins still has a role to play for us this season, Coops will bring in a younger defender on loan and if he didn’t I’d be very surprised, but the more he plays the fitter he should become and the more he’ll ‘find his legs’ again.

His experience is something that those around him, the younger players and the more senior ones too, must have been gaining something from in training but they can also benefit from this in a match situation too with him back in the side.
