Danny Wilson made several changes to the team that thumped Oldham Athletic on Saturday. Ali Gibb was brought in at right back, Ben Clark started in midfield, Matty Robson & Ritchie Humphreys teamed up on the left and Joel Porter got a chance upfront.

Adam Rooney had the best chances for Chesterfield, he was a constant threat and his shot was saved by Jan Budtz on 15 minutes. Matty Robson went off with an ‘injury’ on 17 minutes and was replaced by David Foley but there was more attacking down the other end as Budtz was forced to pull off another save.

Pools first real chance came when Gary Liddle slid Joel Porter through on goal, the Aussie got a touch but the shot went narrowly wide. Just minutes later Pools broke the deadlock, great play from Ritchie Barker was followed by a good ball into the box. David Foley slid the ball into the bottom of the net to give Pools the lead.

Pools had another chance before half time but Joel Porters shot was dealt with by Chesterfield keeper Barry Roache.

Soon after the play resumed the advantage was doubled, James Brown lifted the ball over the keeper and into the net as Pools continiued their dominance.

Just 8 minutes later and Pools grabbed a third, James Brown tapped home after a Michael Mackay played the ball to the youngster. Brown was substituted shortly after this, Wilson wanted to save him for the weekend game.

After he set up the third Michael Mackay could have added a fourth, the former Consett man towards goal but the Spirites keeper did well to save his shot.

Wayne Allison pulled a goal back for Chesterfield but it was mere consilation as Pools were happy to play the clock down until the end of the game. The ref blew for full time and Pools booked their place in round 2.

FT: Chesterfield 1-3 Hartlepool

Comment
It was another good win for Pools, James Brown scored twice and a lot of fringe players got a good runout. I’m glad Michael Mackay was given some game time, he seemed like a decent player in the final stages against Bristol Rovers and deserves a shot at the first team.

The way the draw is worked out the chances of us meeting Darlington in the next round are pretty high, another chance to beat them on their own patch perhaps?
