Hartlepool started the season like a house on fire, however now it’s more like we’re assessing the damage this fire caused and are now struggling to come to terms with it as the run, for as good as it was to start the season, has been as bad, if not worse since!

Pools have suffered four defeats on the spin but Matthew Bates, as disappointed as he obviously is, has told the Hartlepool Mail he’ll not have any ‘sleepless nights’ just yet and doesn’t feel anyone else should either.

Four wins on the trot in league and cup, which included three in the league, to kick-off the season saw Pools flying but four straight defeats have since been suffered! Exeter caused this fourth straight defeat with a late winner last time round with former Middlesbrough man Bates of the opinion a win against Cambridge could start another positive run.

‘The time to be looking at the league table is 12-15 games.

‘I know we’ve lost four matches on the bounce but it`s still early in the season. If we win (against Cambridge) we could easily get on another run.’

He went onto add that he feels we should take the positives from that Exeter defeat.

‘There were parts of the game we’ve played well against a team known for its passing.

‘As the lads settle in and the gaffer finds his best team, there will be bigger and better things to come from us.

‘We’re seven league games in, so it’s too early to be worried.’

Bates finished by saying heads remain high, they were down after the defeat, but he knows League 2 is the type of league where ‘you can as easily win four games on the trot as you can lose them’ so that’s the next aim.

Pools have lost four in a row, ideally this next run isn’t going to be with another four defeats!
