Sometimes a wakeup call is needed isn’t it?

Hartlepool started the season poorly under Colin Cooper (it didn’t look like he would last very long in his role with us did it at times!) but a few weeks ago that first league two win came with the 2-1 win against Accrington Stanley.

That was followed up with a 2-2 draw against Bristol Rovers, which was almost another win.

A mini run of form can build confidence, but they always say there is a fine line between confidence and arrogance don’t they!

Perhaps that line was crossed? So a “kick up the backside”, as Cooper put it, with the defeat against Oxford at the weekend might bring some back down to earth and perhaps be a good thing in the long run?

Cooper told the Hartlepool Mail: ‘We’ve been rolling along nicely and I think we’d hoped for more of the same.

‘It was a nice day, we were playing in front of our own fans and I think we thought ‘we’ll play some nice football, score some goals and go away happy’ but we’ve had a kick up the backside and we have to react.’

That reaction that Cooper is looking for will be a tough one to gain as next up for Pools are Mansfield, who are bang in form and he knows it!

He added: ‘Mansfield have had a fantastic victory away to Chesterfield so they’ll be flying when we go down there on Saturday.

‘They are a big physical side and we`ll have to be ready.’

If we can get a point from the Stags that would be a great return, but if that arrogant swagger isn’t shown then something more could be possible and shouldn’t be ruled out…
