A Real Kick In The Goolies

I hate having the League Cup (or what ever it’s called this season), in the first week of the campaign. Before a team has a settled side, within the first four or five days, they can be both bottom of the league and out of a major competition. A couple of away fixtures can add to this possibility.

Although Hartlepool has sold over 3,000 (cut price) season tickets, the general mood of the fans was not very optimistic, even before the first ball was kicked, and now, after a single defeat in league and being knocked out of the league cup, we’re looking at up at most teams in the league and have lost one of our two chances of hosting a top flight club at the Vic.

The manager will now be under early pressure from the terraces. A single one nil league defeat before the first home game wouldn’t have hurt so much, but adding a 6-2 drubbing in the league cup is a real kick in the goolies.

Pre season signings were performed in a chaotic manner, with four players being signed at the eleventh hour. I think we all know the answer to the most asked question. Did Pools wait until the last minute to sign the players hoping for better ones to become available or did the four players wait until they were sure that they would receive no better offers before signing for pools.

I am generally unhappy when managers adopt a ‘job for the boys’ stance and am not impressed with us becoming Middlesbrough OB in all but name, but I have hopes for Matthew Bates, who, I believe is a good, honest, reliable player who will give us 90 minutes per match.

After all this gloom and doom, I’m still hopeful for a home win this coming Saturday and look forward to reporting that the manager has ‘turned things around’ after a shaky start to the season.
