Sam Collins is definitely at the veteran stage of his career but this career will continue to go on after a new deal was agreed for him to stay at the Vic.

Having Coops as his manager, a fellow defender who also carried on his playing career well into this thirties, has helped bring Collins this new contract but it’s a contract that makes perfect sense him being given and as Collins himself admitted it was ‘too good to turn down’.

I’d said that we should look to get the 36 year old not only tied down as a player but bring him into the coaching set up at the Vic and we’ve done exactly that.

Becoming the new assistant to Coops is a great move as it gives Coops that right hand man he’s been missing since Craig Hignett left but it also gives him the guidance from someone that has a long term history with the club.

It’s a situation that sees everybody in the first team and the reserve team at Hartlepool benefit and it of course keeps Collins at the Vic and keeps him available in a playing capacity as well with his influence and experience something that the younger defenders can continue to benefit from.
